From the lovelorn streets of Romeo and Juliet’s Verona and Julius Caesar’s murderous machinations in Rome, to the frothy mix of sex, money and intrigue in Othello’s Venice, Shakespeare’s fascination with Italy is a constant undercurrent of his work. His Italian settings are so crucial to his plots that they have become characters in their own right – and his influence can be felt in Italy today.
From The Merchant of Venice to Othello through Romeo & Juliet and Much Ado About Nothing, award-winning UK playwright, actor and director Justin Butcher follows Shakespeare’s love affair with Italy in an exquisite collage of scenes, speeches and songs which conjure a spell of Shakespearean enchantment by turns comic, vulgar, passionate and poignant, transporting you across the centuries to Shakespeare’s Italy. Performed by award-winning British actors and interwoven with the haunting songs of renowned Anglo-Italian singer and multi-instrumentalist Daniel Zappi.
Performed in English with Italian sub-titling
